King Warns Financial Crisis Has Worsened: Britain is not even halfway through the financial crisis that began five years ago and the economic situation has worsened in the past few weeks, the Governor of the Bank of England warned today.Giving evidence to the Commons Treasury Select Committee, Sir Mervyn King said that the situation has deteriorated in the past six weeks and that he was particularly pessimistic about ongoing developments in the eurozone. “In the past six weeks I am very struck by how much has changed since we produced our May Inflation Report,” he said. “I am pessimistic. I am particularly concerned because over two years now we have seen the situation in the euro area get worse and the problem being pushed down the road.” more

The Russian war games began the same day President Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a frosty summit meeting in Mexico June 18. U.S. officials said the arctic exercises over the Russian Far East and Pacific appeared to be a further sign of Russia’s hardening posture toward the United States.
