Stern US warning to Syria not to invade Northern Lebanon

Syrian commandos poised on Lebanese border
Washington accompanied this warning to Damascus, DEBKAfile has learned, with its first explicit threat of military intervention to aid Lebanon should Syria go through with its planned incursion of the North.
DEBKAfile first revealed the concentration of 10,000 Syrian troops on the Lebanese border on Sept. 20 and again on Sept. 27.

The warning, according to our sources, was delivered on Sept. 28 by secretary of state Condoleezza Rice to the Syrian foreign minister Walid Mualem whom she invited for an urgent meeting in New York. The day after they met, Mualem was handed a second warning by undersecretary of state David Welch, who specified precisely whic Syrian movements the US government would deem crossing the Lebanese border.
The harsh words from the top two American diplomats left the Syrian minister with little option but to promise there would be no Syrian incursion. However, in a number of subsequent interviews, Mualem claimed his talks with the two American officials focused on Washington’s support for the indirect talks between Jerusalem and Damascus, a tale made of whole cloth.
In the week since Washington warned Damascus off, nothing has changed in the Syrian military deployment on the Lebanese, our military sources confirm.
Syrian officials talking to Western diplomats are now maintaining that Islamic extremists are setting up an emirate in northern Lebanon which will jeopardize the stability of the entire region. Since Damascus has been warned off interfering in Lebanon by Washington, it cannot take responsibility for the consequences.
Syria’s determination to occupy the northern region of Tripoli is not lost on the Lebanese. The highest ranking Salafi authority in Lebanon, Dai al-Islam Shahhal, warned this week against an incursion by the Syrian army into north Lebanon, saying it would open 'the gates of hell and lead to what is similar to Iraq and its misery."

"We will use disproportionate force against these villages (in southern Lebanon) and cause enormous destruction because from our point of view these are not villages but military bases," Major General Gadi Eisenkot, the top commander in northern Israel was quoted by Yediot Aharonot on Friday.
He said "what applies to Hezbollah applies even more to Syria."
The regime accuses Syria of providing the Lebanese resistance with military supplies, and has called on Damascus to cut its ties with Hezbollah as a precondition for peace talks.
Syria however rejected Israel's demand for cutting ties with Hezbollah.
Speaking in an interview by the London-based daily Asharq al-Awsat on Wednesday, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem said "It is not correct that Syria is supplying Hezbollah with weapons and equipment".
Israel fought a 33-day war against Hezbollah in summer 2006, but faced a heavy defeat after it failed to achieve its goals to destroy the military power of the Lebanese resistance.
The remarks comes just days after former Israeli Premier Ehud Olmert who according to Winograd report was among the three officials mainly responsible for the Israel's 'failures' during the Lebanon war was forced to officially resign on 21 September.
The ex-Prime Minister's popularity rating began to leg badly behind his rivals after the war.

74-25, the bill is passed. Or technically, the amendment is agreed to. Now that the amendment is agreed to, they'll vote on passing the bill as amended, which means it's pretty much the exact same vote, as the Majority Leader said.
P.S. -- One upshot of this outcome is that when John McCain jetted into town to broker a deal, his deal fell apart. When Obama came to town and started working the phones, the bailout passed.
I didn't like the bill, but that's something to take away from it.

The names of four former top leaders of the Weathermen terrorist organization are listed as signatories on an online petition calling for an "independent grassroots effort" to help strengthen Sen. Barack Obama's campaign.
The petition was initiated by Progressives for Obama, an independent organization acting to ensure the Illinois senator's election.

- Bailing Out the Bailout
The irresponsibility and failure of leadership in Congress has already sent the stock market to a record decline this week. The proposed Wall Street rescue plan failed due to the political maneuvering of a few, despite wide bipartisan support. But the proposed bailout was a disgrace. It left taxpayers on the hook for the excesses of Wall Street, even though economists said the effects of the plan wouldn’t trickle down to ordinary Americans.
Reps. Peter DeFazio (D-OR) and Marcy Kaptur (D-OH) joined the program last night to discuss a different plan – one based on the recommendations of former head of the FDIC William Issac. Instead of paying billions of dollars for Wall Street’s worthless debt, this plan calls for a sensible re-regulation of the markets and a mechanism similar to the Resolution Trust Corporation, which was set up after the savings and loan failures of the 1980s.

The TRUTH About The Bailout
You have heard that its all "American Gambles"
You have been told repeatedly by George Bush and Henry Paulson that this bill is about a "rescue" of Main Street, not Wall Street.
You have been lied to repeatedly.
The bill The Senate intends to try to ramrod down your throat is neither about Main Street or really even about Wall Street.
You are going to get VERY angry. Sit down before you read further.

That's right folks. You are going to have $700 billion - about 25% of the total federal budget - put on your personal credit card (via taxes forever) in order to bail out foreign investors.
Oh, and the best part of it is that the underlying assets involved do not even have to be in the United States!
Here is the definition of a "troubled asset", right from the bill:
"(9) TROUBLED ASSETS.—The term ‘‘troubled assets’’ means— (A) residential or commercial mortgages and any securities, obligations, or other instruments that are based on or related to such mortgages, that in each case was originated or issued on or before March 14, 2008, the purchase of which the Secretary determines promotes financial market stability;
and (B) any other financial instrument that the Secretary, after consultation with the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, determines the purchase of which is necessary to promote financial market stability, but only upon transmittal of such determination, in writing, to the appropriate committees of Congress."
Notice that conspicuously missing from the definition is the requirement that the asset's underlying thing (that is, the property that was mortgaged, etc) lies within the United States. Also note that Treasury must tell Congress if they add "new types" of debt, but that Congress has no right of review or censure.
That is, it is perfectly legitimate under the bill for a foreign bank to sell or swap any "crap sandwich" it may hold (irrespective of how or where it originated, so long as a mortgage is the basis for it somewhere) with a bank domiciled in the United States, and said bank may then "PUT" it into the TARP.
Note also that Representative Sherman said on Kudlow last night that when this was raised with Secretary Paulson he was told that if Congress tried to restrict the ability of the Secretary to purchase assets "laundered" in this fashion from foreigners, that the bill would be vetoed.
Here 'ya go folks.

US F-35 can strike air and ground targets
The Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency has approved the $15.2 billion sale of 25 F-35 Strike Fighters for Israel with an option for another 50, saying it is vital to US national security interests to assist Israel develop “a strong and ready self-defense capability.”
DEBKAfile’s military sources report that President George W, Bush, in mid-financial crisis, fully discharged his promise of a defense package for Israeli before he left office. There was no announcement of the date of supply.
Earlier this month, the Pentagon approved up to $330 million in three separate arms deals for Israel and posted its advanced FBX-band radar system to an Israeli Air Force base in the Negev.
Israel is the first foreign nation to receive the up-to-the-minute Lockheed Martin F-35 Strike Fighter, which will replace the older F-16 fighters and enhance its air-to-air and air-to-ground defenses and by virtue of five exceptional features:
1. An advanced radar for striking ground or air targets long distance while destroying any threat in its immediate environment.
2. An electro-optical targeting system (EOTS).
3. The pilot’s helmet-mounted displays (HMD).
4. It is the first fighter plane in the world with a communications system linked to satellites.
5. The capacity for carrying large quantities of ordnance - from joint direct attack munitions to AIM-120 and AIM-132 air-to-air missiles.
The first consignment of 25 F-35’s has a conventional take-off and landing (CTOL) configuration, while the next 50 are short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) aircraft. In the event of an armed conflict, the Israel Air Force calculates that its long runways will be in danger of attack by Iran, Syria, Hizballah and Hamas.
The deal was approved after senior Israeli and US officials met in Washington this month and assurances were tendered that sensitive technologies would not be passed to third parties.

Israel destroys Damascus, then Russia invades

These days it doesn't require much dusting to see Russia is conspicuously etching its indelible fingerprints upon the Middle East. In a bid to regain superpower status, the ancient Muscovites are forming unprecedented alliances with Iran and Syria, the two primary enemies of modern day Israel.
These strengthening ties, coupled with a 2,600-year-old Ezekiel prophecy, has end time eschatologists racing against the clock to publish their next cutting edge books.
For those unfamiliar with the Old Testament prophet, he foretells in Chapters 38 and 39 the coming of a Russian – Iranian-led, nuclear-equipped coalition that invades Israel in the last days. For a litany of recent newsworthy reasons, all indicators point to this enormous episode occurring in the very near future.
Although volumes of Ezekiel invasion best-sellers should soon justifiably line world bookshelves, these authors must be cautious not to put the colloquial cart before the proverbial horse.
Indeed Russia and Iran are ready to make their moves, but what about Syria? Oddly Syria, who today panders alongside Iran for Russian affections, is not included among the elite nine members of the Ezekiel 38 and 39 consortium of attacking nations. Why not? What knocks their quiver of missiles out of the Ezekiel military equation?
As I have documented in my recently released book, "Isralestine, The Ancient Blueprints of the Future Middle East," the Bible makes quite clear that in a distinctly separate Psalm 83 episode Damascus, the capital of Syria, soon ceases to be a city, and subsequently shortly thereafter Russia and Iran advance against Israel.
