Former U.S. Army Master Sergeant John Hatley is now serving a forty year sentence in Leavenworth prison. He was convicted by a 2009 Court Martial of murdering four Iraqi insurgent arrestees in Baghdad following a 2007 ambush and firefight, and dumping the bodies into a Baghdad canal. Two other Sergeants with the Alpha Company 1-18 1st Infantry were also convicted and sent to prison.

THE AMERICAN DREAM IS OVER
America now has the highest poverty rate in the industrialised world. Over fifty million US citizens live in poverty. Fifty million Americans need to use food stamps to eat. Half of all US children will use a food stamp to eat at some point in their childhood. Twenty thousand people are added to the US poverty total every day. In 2009, one out of five US households didn’t have enough money to buy food.
Over fifty million US citizens are living without healthcare. 1.4 million Americans filed for bankruptcy in 2009, a 32% increase from 2008. Medical bankruptcies are responsible for over 60% of these, and over 75% of the medical bankruptcies filed are from people who have healthcare insurance. In total, Americans have lost $5 trillion from their pensions and savings since the economic crisis began in the Autumn of 2008. Over the same period, the value of their homes has gone down by $13 trillion. During the first full year of the crisis, workers between the age of fifty and sixty, who had worked for twenty to twenty nine years, lost an average of 25% off their $401,000 personal wealth. Personal debt has risen from 65% of income in 1980 to 125% of income today. Over five million US families have lost their homes. Thirteen million more US families are expected to lose their homes by the year 2014. Twenty five per cent of current mortgages are underwater. Deutsche Bank has predicted that the percentage of underwater loans may rise to forty eight percent, or 25 million homes. Every day ten thousand US homes enter foreclosure. An increasing number of those evicted are not finding shelter elsewhere. There are now over three million homeless Americans. The fastest growing segment of the US homeless population is single parents with children. More here (20.02.10).
